MARVAL, O'FARRELL & MAIRAL is the largest and one of the oldest law firms in Argentina; it dates back to 1923 when it was founded as an office specifically dedicated to intellectual property law by two brothers, J.A. & E. de Marval. In 1938, when Jorge E. O'Farrell (1915-2000) joined the firm, its activities were extended to include the provision of legal services and the name of the firm was changed to Marval & O'Farrell. With this name the firm established its world-wide reputation amongst the international business community. In 1991 Héctor A. Mairal joined the firm and its name was changed to Marval, O'Farrell & Mairal. The firm has grown considerably in recent years and currently has over 300 professionals. The firm's law practice covers a wide range of legal services to financial institutions, commerce and industry and to diverse sectors of government, placing a strong emphasis on providing high quality legal services with a creative and innovative approach to attaining clients' goals. Although the firm practises Argentine law, its lawyers are well attuned to business issues and the complexities of multi-jurisdictional transactions and they work closely with clients in seeking solutions to the competitive challenges facing modern business today. The patent and trademark agency group provides a comprehensive registration and protection service to its business clients. It works in close co-ordination with the legal practice, particularly in the areas of mediation and dispute resolution and in transactional due diligence. The firm's broad client base includes domestic and foreign commercial and investment banks, as well as a wide variety of domestic and foreign companies, including many Fortune 500 companies and in the public sector, the Argentine government and the Argentine Central Bank, international organisations such as the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Inter-American Development Bank. MARVAL, O'FARRELL & MAIRAL also has offices in the Argentine city of Córdoba. In New York the firm has a representative office and lawyers are seconded to Demarest e Almeida, an associate firm in Brazil. It is the firm's policy to invest in leading-edge information technology and to have an ongoing training programme with in-house training sessions to ensure that its professionals keep up to date with continually changing business and legal developments. Furthermore, at any given time several members of the firm will be on training assignments with leading U.S. and European law firms or universities.
