Mission statement:

Employment of Veterans
Academy Securities has made it part of their mission to set the standard and example for socially responsible business enterprises. In keeping with that mission, Academy makes it a top priority to provide employment opportunities to both veterans and service-disabled veterans, at a time in our nation’s history when this need has become acute. To further these initiatives, Academy also supports organizations whose objectives are to identify, retrain and place disabled veterans in positions of long-term employment following their military service.

Employment Opportunities for Veterans
The number of skilled service-disabled veterans is expanding rapidly. An April 7, 2010 article in USA Today identifies the major problems facing veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Labor recently estimated that unemployment of returning veterans has tripled since the recession began, rising from 5% in March 2007 to 15% in March 2010. About 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans are reported to have some service-connected disability, compared with 13% of all veterans. Clearly there is an escalating need for high-quality employment and training opportunities for returning veterans.

However, it appears that veterans are having difficulty translating their substantial military skills – e.g., initiative, leadership and operational discipline under pressure – into private sector jobs. In addition, many employers are reluctant to hire returning forces because of concerns about combat-related illnesses and requirements to leave jobs open for a year if individuals are called back to duty. Because of this, President Obama announced in November 2009 an effort to expand federal recruitment, training and hiring of veterans.

Academy Securities is seeking to address these challenges faced by recently disabled veterans who return home and have difficulty starting new careers. Management believes that the financial services industry, with above-average wages and minimal physical requirements, is well suited for veterans. Training and jobs for returning soldiers with career-limiting disabilities are needed who might otherwise excel in this industry except for the lack of requisite training and certifications.

Support of Non-Profits Dedicated to the Employment of Veterans
To address the training and recruitment issues for returning veterans, most particularly those disabled, an important element of the Company’s business strategy is to enable attractive internships and training and employment opportunities for disabled veterans through a variety of not-for-profit organizations set up to identify, train, and place service-disabled veterans who have the capacity to excel in a variety of corporate environments if given the tools and skill sets required.

Academy is currently working with organizations like the Wounded Warriors Battalion West as well as non-profits like NextGen Vets, a 501(c)(3). The Wounded Warriors Battalion West is a military organization located on Camp Pendleton in San Diego that provides disabled service members with assistance on transition to the civilian work force and educational programs among other things. NextGen Vets provides professional assessments and structured employment introductions to post 9-11 veterans and disabled veterans by identifying, preparing, and placing veterans in demanding, well-compensated management and executive level jobs following their honorable discharge from military service.

Disabled Veterans and Civilian Careers: An Urgent Need
Though U.S. participation in the Iraq conflict is winding down, the war in Afghanistan carries on with greater intensity. Increased number of injured of injured service members means a greater focus on serving disabled vets as a national priority. The numbers speak for themselves:

-1.6 million troops deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001
-35,000 plus physical injuries resulting in disabilities
-Number of disabled vets nationwide has grown 25% since 2001
-Up to 350,000 plus family members adversely impacted by service members’ injuries
-Up to 300,000 vets reporting major post-deployment depression
