The Bank of Nova Scotia

Overview:

Since welcoming our first customers in 1832, Scotiabank has enjoyed continued success by building on traditional core strengths - risk management, cost control, diversification, customer satisfaction and great employees. Our goal is to be the best Canadian-based international financial services company.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an integral part of who we are and how we do business at Scotiabank. Our commitment to CSR provides us with a competitive edge; it contributes to customer and employee satisfaction, helps us meet our shareholder expectations and broadens our community relationships.

Another important component of CSR is our community giving. In 2008, the Bank contributed more than $43 million in sponsorships and donations. Contributions were made to a variety of Canadian and international projects and initiatives, with a focus primarily on education, health care, social services, and arts and culture. Additionally, our employees spent more than 240,000 hours volunteering and fundraising through our formal community programs.

Our Core Businesses

Our core purpose is to be the best at helping customers become financially better off. This guides all our decisions. We are committed to providing excellence in customer service by living our shared values, as a team and individually. Diversification, by business and geography, continues to be the focus of our strategy and underpins our potential for sustainable earnings growth in each of our three business lines - Canadian Banking, International Banking and Scotia Capital - over the long term.

Canadian Banking

Canadian Banking provides a comprehensive range of banking and investing services to more than 7 million customers across Canada through a multi-channel delivery network of more than 21,500 employees, over 1,015 branches, more than 2,940 automated banking machines, Internet and telephone banking, three call centres, 102 wealth management branches, four dealer finance centres and six commercial business support centres.

Canadian Banking includes three main businesses:

   * Retail and Small Business Banking provides mortgages, loans, credit cards, investments, insurance and day-to-day banking products to individuals and small businesses.
   * Wealth Management provides a full range of personal investment and advisory products and services, including retail brokerage, mutual funds and private client services for affluent customers which include investment management, private banking, estate and trust services.
   * Commercial Banking serves medium to large businesses, and provides unique products for agriculture, franchising, leasing, real estate and automotive lending, as well as tailored financing solutions through Roynat Capital.

International Banking

International Banking encompasses Scotiabank's retail and commercial banking operations in more than 40 countries outside Canada - an international presence unmatched by our domestic competitors. More than 47,000 employees, including those working in our subsidiaries and affiliates, provide a full range of financial services to 5.5 million customers through a network of 1,850 branches and offices, 3,300 ABMs, telephone and Internet banking, in-store banking kiosks and specialized sales forces. We operate in the following geographic regions: the Caribbean and Central America, Mexico, Latin America and Asia.

Scotia Capital

Scotia Capital is the wholesale banking arm of the Scotiabank Group. We offer a wide variety of products to corporate, government and institutional investor clients. These include corporate lending, equity underwriting, sales, trading and research and mergers & acquisitions advisory services. We also offer capital markets products and services, such as fixed income, derivatives, prime brokerage, securitization, foreign exchange and, through ScotiaMocatta, precious metals. Scotia Capital is a full-service lender and investment dealer in Canada and Mexico, and offers a wide range of products in the U.S., as well as select products and services to niche markets in Europe and Asia.
