Overview:

The Swiss Investment Fund for Emerging Markets (SIFEM) is a specialized investment advisor providing long-term finance to private equity funds and financial institutions in emerging markets. SIFEM's primary focus is on institutions investing in the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector. On a selective basis, SIFEM also invests in microfinance. SIFEM's investment philosophy is guided by the belief that investing in commercially viable emerging market SMEs can provide investors risk adjusted returns, as well as generate sustainable, long-term development effects in local communities. SIFEM is mandated to manage the investment portfolio of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and other private and public entities.

1995
The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) makes its first emerging markets investment in Profund, a microfinance private equity fund in Latin America

1995 - 2005
SECO develops a portfolio consisting of private equity fund participations and direct financial institution investments in more than 30 developing and transition economies

June 2005
The Swiss Investment Fund for Emerging Markets (SIFEM) is established as a privately-held management company mandated to oversee SECO's investment portfolio and advise on new investment opportunities

December 2005
SIFEM wins two additional mandates to represent the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) on the Board of Directors of the European Fund for Southeast Europe (EFSE)

September 2007
SIFEM co-advises with responsAbility on Base of the Pyramid Investments S.C.A. SICAR
