Overview:

Managing a portfolio requires a comprehensive understanding of the client's specific mandate, risk profile and income requirements. Once this has been clearly defined, the optimal asset allocation can be determined. This asset allocation is particularly dependent on our identification and assessment of macro economic factors and broad investment themes affecting markets. Consideration must also be given to the effects of income and capital gains tax on a client's potential returns.

Equity investment is not risk free, but there is no risk-free investment strategy that can protect and grow capital materially in real terms. The risk is best controlled through disciplined and systematic management of portfolios, based on thorough research and analysis.

Melville Douglas believes that the investment styles of value and growth are joined at the hip, with growth always being a component of a share's value. More emphasis is placed on buying good businesses, rather than forecasting macro factors such as markets, commodity prices and currencies.

Where appropriate, all offshore investment allowances and asset swap capacity is utilised to ensure maximum diversification into hard currencies.

The capital values of fixed-interest (bond) and property trust investments are affected by movements in interest rates. Investments in these categories require detailed analysis of the factors affecting interest rate changes and their impact on the yield curve, as well as the duration and volatility of particular investments. In addition, meticulous assessment must be carried out on the investment ratings of issuers and, where applicable, the quality of the underlying property portfolios.

History:

Melville Douglas was founded in 1983 by Christopher Melville and Harvey Douglas. Their objective was to develop a company dedicated to providing a highly personalised investment management service for select, high net worth private clients.
