History:

The earliest associations of the peoples of the Channel Islands were with France their nearest neighbour. In the year 911 the Channel Islands were annexed by Duke Rollo of Normandy and from that period Jersey became culturally and constitutionally part of Normandy. Rollo’s descendant, Duke William, conquered England after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and thereafter he and his successors were simultaneously Kings of England and Dukes of Normandy. When, however, William’s descendant King John lost the greater part of his possessions on the mainland of France to the French King in 1204, the Channel Islands were left as virtually the last remnant of the once extensive continental possessions of the Crown.
