Overview:

GTs Advocates is one of the leading law firms in Mongolia.  The firm provides a comprehensive range of legal and business services in more than ten areas, including mining and energy, infrastructure, international finance and trade, construction, foreign direct investment and mergers and acquisitions, dispute resolution, labor, and tax planning, among others. The firm was established in 1999 and represents multinational clients from North America, Australia, Europe and Asia as well as Mongolian companies and governmental entities for both domestic and international matters.

The firm’s team of lawyers consists of highly motivated professionals who have studied in the United States or Europe and who understand the needs of clients from diverse jurisdictions.  We pride ourselves on our international outlook and our local insight into the Mongolian legal system and the customary ways of conducting business in one of Asia’s most exciting emerging markets.  The working language of the firm is English and Mongolian.  Some of the lawyers are also fluent in Russian, German or Chinese.

Mongolia’s extensive mineral resources have attracted foreign investors from around the globe.  GTs Advocates has advised such foreign investors on all aspects of the Mongolian regulatory regime governing the application for, issuance and cancellation of operating permits for mining activities as well as regulatory requirements for mining operations and environmental reclamation.  This is an area of increasing significance for our clients as Mongolia’s Parliament has embarked upon a programme of reexamining and amending existing legislation and regulatory approvals.  As the state of the law is subject to change, foreign and domestic companies need to assure themselves that they are keeping abreast of development.

GTs Advocates has become renowned as the foremost law firm advising on international financial transactions on behalf of institutions such as EBRD, IFC, ING and UBS.  In particular, notwithstanding the global financial crisis, we have assisted with nearly all the major loan agreements concluded with Mongolian corporate borrowers in the past year.  We have recently been retained to advise on a future currency swap transaction to be partially denominated in Mongolian tughriks, a first-ever for the country.

In May 2007, GTs Advocates began to develop ties with the London-based international law firm Lovells.  In April 2009, Michael Aldrich, a partner in Lovells’ Beijing office, moved to Ulaanbaatar to be a consultant and advisor to the firm, assisting the lawyers with the perfection of its international law firm management procedures and the preparation of advice and documentation for its clients.  Through this relationship with Mr. Aldrich, GTs Advocates is able to draw upon the extensive resources of Lovells’ global network to provide seamless service to its clients.
