STEP Bahamas

Overview:

STEP Bahamas is part of the STEP Worlwide organization which has a global membership of over 13,000 members. The primary purpose of STEP is to provide to its members education, networking opportunities and to raise the profile of wealth management, particularly in the field of trusts and estate management.

STEP Bahamas has over 400 members (including student members) that are comprised of attorneys, chartered accountants, insurance specialists, tax planners, trust officers, private bankers, and other wealth management disciplines. This makes our branch the 3rd largest branch in the Western Hemisphere out of 77 branches.

The Trust & Estate Practitioner (“TEP”) designation that is awarded by STEP to its qualified members is now becoming the internationally recognized certification in the field of wealth management and in some jurisdictions is a prerequisite for employment within the Trustee field.

STEP Bahamas has made great strides in the area of student members who have gone on to become full STEP members by virtue of completing the STEP diploma, or Qualified Practitioner program (see “Membership” tab). Our local branch has approximately 176 student members and this makes us the second largest student Branch for STEP worldwide. In September 2003 we established the STEP Caribbean Regional Training Center in the Goodman’s Bay Corporate Center. We share premises with the Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB) and the Association of International Bank and Trust Companies (AIBT). We continue to foster the progression of education by awarding scholarships for tracts of the diploma and this year in conjunction with GAM have offered two scholarships for the completion of the Diploma Foundation course.

We continue to expand our membership and we encourage you to apply for membership through the “Thesis” route and the STEP Diploma (refer to “Membership” tab).

STEP Bahamas has been very active in hosting monthly luncheon meetings and seminars presented by top authorities in their fields. We invite you to join us for these luncheons whether or not you are a member. This year we have had a wide range of topics including US Beneficiaries of Foreign Trusts – What Every Trustee and Attorney Should Know to an Overview of current initiatives in the Bahamas Financial Services Industry (refer to our “Events” tab).
