Profile:

From our beginnings in 1904 as a single lawyer operation to our status as one of the top international law firms, Hogan & Hartson carries on a tradition of excellence established by our founder, Frank J. Hogan. As the economy and our clients’ businesses have globalized, so, too, has Hogan & Hartson. What remains constant, however, are the transcending professional and cultural values that distinguish us from other major law firms: our unwavering commitment to client service, excellence, integrity, community service, and diversity, and our recognized industry focus and team-oriented approach.

With more than 1,100 lawyers practicing in 27 offices worldwide, we work seamlessly across multiple practices and offices to provide our clients with exceptional service and creative advice. Working at the intersection of business and government, both domestically and internationally, we help our clients structure and complete their projects and transactions; vigorously represent their interests in all kinds of complex litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution; guide them and their businesses through the maze of government regulation; and secure, protect, and defend their intellectual property. Because our clients’ success and satisfaction are paramount goals for all Hogan & Hartson lawyers, our teams create a working experience that evolves into enduring relationships.
Overview:

Hogan & Hartson is one of the largest law firms in Berlin. We opened our doors in 2001, bringing together preeminent attorneys from a number of Germany's leading firms. Today we have more than 50 attorneys, many with international legal qualifications and experience. All of our attorneys are fluent in German and English.

Our experienced team of attorneys offer a broad-based transactional, government regulation, and litigation practice covering all aspects of German law. We work with German as well as multinational companies that are privately held or publicly traded. In particular, we are renowned for our work in regulated industries, earning a reputation built on:
Our unique combination of transactional and litigation experience and regulatory know-how.
In-depth industry knowledge.
Long-standing contacts with government and public administration bodies.

JUVE ranks the firm for media, privatization, public law, and energy. JUVE also mentions and recommends us for labor and employment, project finance, antitrust, corporate, M&A, telecommunications, and public procurement. This diverse knowledge enables us to provide our clients with a real understanding of the issues they face from a legal and industry standpoint.

We offer competitive teams of advisors, focused on achieving our clients’ business and project objectives. We do not believe in over-lawyering. Our transactional, regulatory, and litigation professionals work together to provide more comprehensive and realistic advice. They are people with in-depth experience in their fields of practice.

We pride ourselves on our personal commitment and invest significant time in face-to-face meetings with clients to understand their commercial challenges. We then work with them to create tailored and pragmatic solutions.

Berlin is the headquarters for Hogan & Hartson in Germany. The Berlin office, together with our Munich office, has a national and international practice. We work closely with the firm’s offices in the United States, Asia, and throughout Europe. The firm’s global reach, combined with our in-house international experience, enables us to provide informed advice and significant value to domestic clients and multinational companies conducting business in Germany.
History:

Hogan & Hartson has more than 1,100 lawyers serving clients in a practice that cuts across virtually all legal disciplines. From its beginnings as a single-lawyer operation in 1904, to its current status as a top international law firm with 27 offices on four continents, modern-day Hogan & Hartson carries on a tradition of excellence established by its founder, Frank J. Hogan.

Hogan opened his law practice in Washington, D.C. in 1904, quickly earning fame as America’s leading trial lawyer as a result of a string of successes in high-profile, politically charged cases. In 1924 Hogan represented oil magnate Edward L. Doheny who had been indicted in the “Teapot Dome” scandal on charges of bribery and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Doheny was acquitted, while Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall was found guilty of accepting the bribe. Such cases earned Hogan a national reputation as the most famous trial lawyer in the country and attracted Nelson T. Hartson, former solicitor of internal revenue, to the firm in 1925 to establish a business practice to complement the firm's established trial practice. That same year, the firm’s regulatory practice was established with the hiring of John William “Duke” Guider. Guider had worked between college and law school at the Washington, D.C. headquarters of Radio Corporation of America, and played a key role in establishing the firm as a pioneer in the communications practice. Meanwhile, Hogan continued to take on high-profile cases including the successful defense of Andrew Mellon in the 1930s on charges of tax fraud, and a precedent-setting series of libel cases against the Hearst newspaper empire. This continued growth and success led to the 1938 partnership between Hogan and Hartson.

Throughout the next half-century, the firm continued to expand and distinguish itself in numerous areas. These included its tax practice, brought to national repute by Seymour Mintz from the Office of Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service; its legislative and government affairs practice, developed in part by Edward A. McDermott; the firm’s Supreme Court practice and reputation, built largely by E. Barrett Prettyman Jr.; and its health law practice, established by Rep. Paul G. Rogers, former member of Congress in the U.S. House of Representatives from the 11th District of Florida. As the activities of the federal government expanded, the number and scope of Hogan & Hartson's practice areas also grew. While litigation (both trial and appellate), taxation, health, and communications remain major focuses of the firm's practice, many other areas have been added over the years, including all significant aspects of corporate, regulatory, intellectual property, and legislative.

In the 1970s, Hogan & Hartson became the first major law firm in the United States to establish a separate practice group devoted exclusively to providing pro bono legal services. Since its inception, the firm’s Community Services Department (CSD) has received numerous awards and public accolades from organizations such as the American Bar Association, the D.C. Bar, the Whitman-Walker AIDS clinic, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the American Red Cross, the International Human Rights Law Group, and the National Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights. Comprised of several full-time lawyers working solely on pro bono cases, this distinctive department earned Hogan & Hartson the prestigious Pro Bono Publico Award from the American Bar Association in 1991.

The beginning of a major evolutionary shift for Hogan & Hartson came in 1984 with the opening of a Northern Virginia office — the firm’s first office outside of the district. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, Hogan & Hartson's status as a leading international law firm is well established with offices in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia — and cooperative working relationships with law firms throughout the world. The firm's international experience includes local law issues in the majority of the jurisdictions where it maintains offices, as well as international commercial transactions, government regulation of international business, international trade, and international litigation and arbitration.

While anticipating the continued expansion of its practice for years to come, Hogan & Hartson remains guided by a core philosophy that includes a dedication to community service, a vital and cohesive culture, and a reputation for excellence in every aspect of its practice.
