We are pleased to report that Drinker received the #2 ranking in Philadelphia and the #10 ranking in the nation for our summer associates program in The American Lawyer's 2009 Summer Associate Survey. These results reflect the strong commitment of the firm to the program and our aspiring lawyers. Work
We work on difficult and complex matters. We represent clients in national products liability class actions, public offerings, complicated mergers and joint ventures, securities class actions, complex commercial disputes, difficult employment cases, restructurings through bankruptcy, patent disputes, special litigation and investigative counsel assignments, synthetic leases and large project financings, cutting edge tax opinions and consumer fraud class actions. The kind of work we do and strive to do is of the highest quality. We go the extra mile for our clients and are rewarded with challenging work. The ABA chose us from among all firms nationwide to represent it in the United States Supreme Court last term and we succeeded in ensuring that capital defendants receive effective representation of counsel.
People
We hire the best, and we make every effort to provide the best training, best mentoring, and best work available. We insist that our lawyers adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards. We are proud of our people, their accomplishments, and our role in their development. During the 20th century, three of our partners have chaired the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics & Professional Responsibility, a record unmatched by any other law firm. Lawyers who have begun their careers here have succeeded in many endeavors, both inside and outside the firm. Our alumni include general counsel of some of the largest companies in the world, in-house and government lawyers, law school professors, federal and state judges, hedge and private equity fund managers, U.S. attorneys and state prosecutors, a Deputy Secretary for Tax Policy and the chief counsel of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, as well as artists and scientists.
Community Service
We have a long and distinguished pro bono record. Today's senior partners were mentored by lawyers who litigated landmark First Amendment cases, defended accused communists before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, and marched on Selma. We are committed to continuing our tradition of pro bono service. We litigate death penalty cases; we defend prisoner's rights; and we work with the families of September 11 victims. Equally important, we take on many, many pro bono cases that are not high profile but are crucially important to our clients. We assist families and individuals in domestic violence cases and help the disabled and indigent receive the benefits to which they are entitled. During the past year, some of our pro bono activities have been the subject of features and articles on National Public Radio and in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe, Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, National Law Journal and The American Lawyer. Life
We believe that a law firm should provide an environment in which people can grow through the various stages of their lives. We aspire to make each of our lawyers a trusted counselor to our clients, and we believe that the best lawyers are those whose practices are enriched by the quality of their experiences outside the office. We encourage and reward associates for undertaking community activities, and many serve on the board of local schools, churches and synagogues, charities, and similar institutions. Some of our lawyers teach or have taught - at various law schools and in premier trial advocacy programs. We seek to stay ahead of the curve in recognizing the need for balance in peoples' lives. We continually revise our policies relating to family leave and reduced hours to provide workable and flexible alternatives for those whose life demands them. Our Associates Committee serves as a forum to encourage communication between associates and management and the partnership. Recently we have reaffirmed our commitment to diversity under the direction of our Chairman, as described in detail in the Diversity section of this website.

Our 160-plus year history is marked by service to the public and the bar and innovating for our clients. Today, we combine a comprehensive range of traditional legal practices with significant national roles in such practices as class action defense, corporate and securities, government relations, health care, intellectual property, insurance, investment management, private equity, bankruptcy, energy, environmental, education and communications. We also remain committed to our long tradition of handling pro bono work and taking on unpopular causes.

Our first year associates spend four months in our nationally recognized development program, which embraces the belief that, while the best learning comes from doing, our clients should not bear the cost associated with the early learning of new associates. Because of that, our first years are not expected to bill work during the program. Led by our partners, the training emphasizes the need for associates to understand the business contexts related to client problems and teaches the skills needed to solve them effectively.
