Our Practice

With more than 50 lawyers and over 15 years of history to build on in the Czech Republic, Weil has unrivaled experience in complex corporate and financial transactions, as well as regulatory and litigation/dispute resolution matters, and is now one of the largest international law firms in Prague.

Our clients in the Czech Republic include international, as well as major Czech companies and banks. We also regularly advise Czech national and municipal governments and public institutions.

In 2008 and 2009 we were, for instance, acting on multiple occasions for ČEZ, Czech incumbent electricity producer and distributor. In this regard we provided our legal services, for example, in connection with the contemplated construction of 2 new nuclear power plant units in the Czech Republic, in acquisition of the German mining company MIBRAG, joint ventures with MOL, largest Hungarian gas and oil company, and Akkok/Akenerji, an important players on Turkish electricity market, or in acquisition and development of Fantanele and Cogealac 600 MW wind farms in Romania.

In 2009 we have also broadened our extensive expertise in complex public procurement, PPP and privatization projects while acting for Ministry of Transport in connection with the privatization transformation of Prague Airport or with respect to various transportation infrastructure PPP projects, as well as key multi-billion public procurement tenders for construction of large parts of Czech highway system, for Regional Government of Usti nad Labem in connection with public service obligation in bus and railway transport systems, and for City of Prague in connection with its infrastructure projects.

In so far as our regulatory and litigation practice is concerned, we represent many Czech and international clients in court litigations and international and domestic arbitrations as well as in regulatory matters, particularly competition/antitrust (including state aid). We were recently acting, for instance, for Ministry of Finance in several investment arbitrations, for ČEZ in connection with its successful privatization arbitration suit and in connection with other complex litigation as well as regulatory (including antitrust) matters, for EVRAZ Vitkovice Steel in connection with settlement of its long-term dispute with ArcelorMittal Group and other commercial disputes, Czech Railways in connection with the biggest abuse of dominant position investigation by the Czech Office for Protection of Competition, Ministry of Transport in connection with multiple law suits by various Czech navigation companies and port operators, Czech Railway Infrastructure Administration, GE Money Bank, Telefónica S.A., Telefónica O2 Czech Republic, Česká spořitelna Bank/Brokerjet, ČEZ, Unipetrol, Czech Airlines, Highways Directorate of the Czech Republic and Prague Airport Authority.

In corporate and financing matters, our practice is reflected in our range of international and domestic corporate and banking clients. For instance, in 2008 and 2009 we represented Unipetrol in squeeze-out of Paramo, ČEZ in connection with share deals concerning interests in major heat producers and suppliers in Prague and Usti regions, or Czech Railways in connection with its sale of railway operation business. We also assisted Czech Airlines acquisition of new Airbus medium haul aircraft and related financing, ČEZ in connection with EUR 550 million refinancing of club loan and USD 300 million bank guarantee facility, Deutsche Bank in connection with USD 300 million refinancing of Hayes Lemmerz and TI Automotive in restructuring of its GBP 610 million commercial loan.

We also have exceptional experience in advising clients on issues of European law and regulation both as regards public and private sector, and inclusive of representation vis-à-vis EU authorities. Our clients in this area include national, various local governments and municipalities, as well as private companies in connection with various competition and merger control issues.
