Overview:

Established in 1911, ARIAS, FABREGA & FABREGA has been at the forefront of the legal profession, advising leading international financial institutions and multinational corporations, as well as some of the largest companies in Panama, for nearly 100 years.

Our practice includes over 28 areas of law, organized into 12 practice groups, including capital markets, banking and finance, mergers and acquisitions, corporations, regulatory work, government contracts, trade, competition and antitrust, real estate, environmental matters, employment relations, trust and estate planning, litigation, taxation and intellectual property.

The firm also has a strong offshore practice, for which it has developed its own network of affiliated offices in London, Luxembourg, Geneva, Hong Kong, The British Virgin Islands and Belize. Under our brand name ARIFA OFFSHORE SERVICES, we offer clients a complete list of offshore solutions, including company formation and management services, as well as trust and foundation services. For selected clients, we offer more sophisticated estate and family financial planning services, as well as trustee services, through our affiliate SWISSARIFA.

The firm has a distinguished reputation for consistently providing the highest quality legal advice and is highly recognized for its unparalleled expertise in structuring complex, innovative and sophisticated mergers and acquisitions and capital market and financial transactions in Panama and the Central America region.

Our success is the result of the superior quality of our lawyers, most of whom have been educated in leading law schools in the United States and Europe or trained in law firms in New York. This unique background of our legal teams enables the firm to act as a bridge between legal and business cultures and to provide effective legal services to clients, particularly in challenging cross-border transactions.

Not surprisingly, the firm and many of its lawyers have always been top-ranked by the leading international legal publications, including Chambers & Partners, IFLR1000, Who's Who Legal, LatinLawyer and PLC WhichLawyer?.

We hold ourselves to the highest professional and ethical standards. This is the principal reason our clients regularly entrust their most difficult and sensitive matters to us.

On-going investments in state-of-the-art law office systems and the support of professional managers and highly trained personnel enable us to offer the most efficient and competitive services to clients.

We take pride in our organization and, with the support of our lawyers, personnel and clients, we expect to continue to focus on what we, for nearly a century, know how to do best: protect our clients' interests with excellence and integrity.
History:

The firm originated in1893, when Dr. Julio J. Fábrega started his practice of law in Panama City. The firm today known as ARIAS, FABREGA & FABREGA was formed in 1911 when Dr. Julio J. Fábrega and Dr. Harmodio Arias M. first became associated in a partnership called Fábrega & Arias. That partnership continued until 1932 when Dr. Harmodio Arias M. became President of Panama and withdrew from the firm. At the same time Dr. Octavio Fábrega became a partner and the firm was then called Fábrega & Fábrega.

In 1936 Dr. Harmodio Arias M. finished his term as President and returned to the firm. The senior partner at the time, Dr. Julio J. Fábrega, insisted that for reasons of protocol the name be changed to ARIAS, FABREGA & FABREGA. The firm has remained with the same name ever since.

Dr. Julio J. Fábrega studied law in the Republic of Colombia at the end of the Nineteenth Century. Dr. Harmodio Arias M. was a graduate of the University of Cambridge and the London School of Economics. Dr. Octavio Fábrega graduated from Harvard Law School (L.L.B.) and Georgetown Law School (S.J.D.).

The three founders of the firm held numerous posts as public servants. In addition to Dr. Harmodio Arias M. having served as President of Panama on two occasions, the founding partners held, at different times, Cabinet posts as Ministers of Foreign Affairs and of Education and were also elected a number of times to the Legislature where they were instrumental in drafting the Mining Code, Civil Code, Administrative Code, Labor Code, Commercial Code as well as Panama's shipping, corporation and income tax legislation.

Besides serving in public positions all three founders at one time or another taught law at the first law school in Panama, which they helped to organize. Dr. Harmodio Arias M. was the founder of the University of Panama in the year 1935.

This rich heritage has been preserved and continued by subsequent partners of the firm. Gilberto Arias held the office of Minister of Finance and Treasury on two administrations. Fernando Cardoze served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and as member of the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Commission and the Panama Canal Authority.

Almost 100 years after its foundation, ARIAS, FABREGA & FABREGA continues the tradition established by its founders.

ARIFA is dedicated to serving the interests of our clients with a commitment to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions that add value and stress what works for our clients based on the highest professional standards.
