Shearman & Sterling's Tokyo office was established in 1987—an important step in the firm's expansion in North Asia—to serve the Japanese market and our international clients who do business in Japan. Today, our Tokyo office is staffed by legal practitioners with diverse backgrounds and experience ranging from global capital markets and mergers and acquisitions to securitization and other financial and corporate transactions.

In Japan, our extensive knowledge of local law and business practices, combined with our local language capabilities, enable us to work closely with clients and local counsel, as well as to facilitate interaction with parties from different business cultures. Having dual US and English law capability, and lawyers who have trained and practiced in international jurisdictions, we can conduct business in Japanese that meets international standards and provide bilingual legal services. This local experience enables us to help clients resolve the numerous legal, business, and cultural issues inherent in Japanese corporate governance and business customs and to execute transactions smoothly and efficiently.

Our Tokyo office advises leading financial institutions and many of the most influential public companies in Japan. To date, the office has listed major Japanese blue-chip companies on US and European stock exchanges, launched some of the most significant global securities offerings and privatizations by Japanese issuers and Japanese government organizations, advised on the largest merger and acquisition deals involving Japanese entities, and completed Japan's first securitization of nonperforming real estate loan portfolios. Our lawyers in Tokyo have also represented various divisions of the Japanese government, including the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as government-affiliated financial institutions in Japan.
