Overview:

Abax Investments traded under the name Polaris Capital from the firms founding in July 2003 until December 2009. The name change was implemented as a result of a ruling by the South African Appellate Court that stated that the likelihood that confusion may arise between the firm and a similarly named American business was undesirable.

Since the firms humble beginings of three clients, three fund managers and R2 Billion under management to its current (in January 2010) size of approximately 20 clients, five fund managers and R33 Billion funds under management. Despite this growth, we have always remained true to a few guiding priciples, namely:

   * a small and focused team of experienced Fund Managers
   * limited number of client relationships
   * exclusive focus on domestic South African listed equity
   * deliberately limited overall assets under management

We believe these points and a conducive working environment are essential if you are to give the investment team the best opportunity to generate excess investment returns.

Today Abax Investments manages client assets in excess of R33 billion but can accommodate all sizes of investors from a monthly debit order of R300 via the Retail unit trusts, to large institutional portfolios via the Abax Equity Fund.

In September 2006, the directors of Abax Investments (Polaris Capital at the time) took the decision to close the business to new segregated client mandates in order to limit the value of funds under management to ensure we retain the best chance of maintaining investment performance and preserving limited, but close client relationships.

As of February 2010, the Nedgroup Investments Rainmaker Fund (for Private Investors) and the Abax Equity Fund (for Retirement Fund and Institutional Investors) remain open. In addition there is some capacity available in our Hedge Fund offering.
