Overview:

The National Pension Act became operational on 1st┬аJanuary 2010. It setup the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to oversee the efficient administration and management of the various pension schemes.

The new Pension Law established contributory three tier pension schemes namely:

   (1st tier) :- a mandatory basic social security scheme to be managed by SSNIT,
   (2nd ┬аtier) ┬а:- ┬аa ┬аmandatory ┬аfully ┬аfunded ┬аand ┬аprivately ┬аmanaged ┬аoccupational Pension scheme
   (3rd┬аtier):- a voluntary fully funded and privately managed provident fund and other personal pension

The Act also brought into being three major actors in the administration and management of pension schemes in the country namely, Trustees, Fund Managers and Custodians. Each of these actors has critical roles to play in order to ensure that contributorsтАЩ retirement incomes are fully secured and appreciable.
